A little history from the official Oktoberfest website - "Why is Oktoberfest called "Oktoberfest" when it actually begins in September?

The historical background: the first Oktoberfest was held in the year 1810 in honor of the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig's marriage to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The festivities began on October 12, 1810, and ended on October 17th with a horse race. In the following years, the celebrations were repeated and, later, the festival was prolonged and moved forward into September.

By moving the festivities up, it allowed for better weather conditions. Because the September nights were warmer, the visitors were able to enjoy the gardens outside the tents and the stroll over "die Wiesen" or the fields much longer without feeling chilly. Historically, the last Oktoberfest weekend was in October and this tradition continues into present times."

Sep 27   Trademark Workshop: You don't understand trademarks. Let me teach you. with Joey Vitale of Indie Law
Let's face it. There's a lot that goes into starting and running a business. Especially on the legal side of things.

One of the most misunderstood areas of law is trademarks ... and these misunderstandings can lead to devastating consequences for your business.

You're not alone — most small business owners (and heck, most lawyers) don't understand trademarks.

WITHOUT STRONG TRADEMARK PROTECTIONS,
YOU COULD LOSE YOUR BRAND. YOU COULD LOSE YOUR BUSINESS.

This workshop is for entrepreneurs, startups, creatives, and owners of small businesses. We'll start by discussing similar but very different terms: trademarks, copyrights, domain names, and business name registrations. You'll learn how just owning a trademark is different from actually having strong trademark rights. You'll understand the importance of filing for trademark protections so that you have exclusive, nationwide rights to your trademark — and you'll learn the benefits and limitations of these protections.

By the end of the workshop, you'll have major peace of mind with a deeper understanding of how to secure and protect your trademarks.

The Wink of the Rabbit + Hess Pinot Gris

Our carefully crafted, small batch burnt sugar caramel is touched with Fleur de Sel from the lie de Re in France and encased in 45% cacao milk chocolate. Each truffle is hand topped with an organic pecan from Las Cruces, New Mexico. This California wine has approachable acids and balanced fruit notes, which pair happily with the caramel-filled truffle.

Oct 17   CAPS Hospitality Subcommittee Meeting

CAPS stands for Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy. This successful program is a partnership between the Chicago Police Department (CPD) and local communities. CAPS, which began in 1993, “brings the police, the community, and other City agencies together to identify and solve neighborhood crime problems, rather than simply react to their symptoms after the fact.” Read more about CAPS at the CPD website.

The idea of forming a CAPS Hospitality Subcommittee for Lincoln Park businesses came as the direct result from feedback the LPCC received from bar and restaurant members who wanted an ongoing forum to discuss items relating to the hospitality industry. The businesses also wanted a way to receive information in a timely matter about issues such as city ordinances, state laws, liquor licenses, security and neighborhood concerns. This subcommittee helps establish better synergy and communication between the City of Chicago, Chicago Police Department and Lincoln Park bar and restaurant owners and managers.

Nov 06   Orpheus Chamber Orchestra at the DePaul University School of Music
Dodging war and chasing riches, top European composers like Hungary’s Miklós Rózsa, Italy’s Nino Rota and Germany’s Franz Waxman immigrated to America and helped to fuel Hollywood’s golden age. Their concert music shows off the evocative tone painting and craftsmanship that made their film scores so indispensable to Hitchcock, Fellini and Coppola, among others. Soloists Ksenija Sidorova and Avi Avital each bring modern glitz and glamor to their old-world instruments, whether playing a reconfigured Bach concerto or debuting the brand-new work written for them by Golden Globe®, GRAMMY® and Emmy® nominated British composer Benjamin Wallfisch. This Orpheus commission is the latest addition to American Notes, a project that explores the landscape of new music from diverse perspectives.
