Jan 30   Music of the Baroque with Conductor Stephen Alltop at The Francis W. Parker School
Francis W. Parker School is excited to announce the second year of the Joan W. Harris Visiting Music Scholar in Residence. This year’s partnership is with Music of the Baroque, a resident ensemble at the Harris Theater that has provided Chicago with top-notch performances of the 17th and 18th centuries for nearly 50 years.

As part of this partnership, students will interact with two internationally celebrated conductors—Music Director Jane Glover and Principal Guest Conductor Nicholas Kraemer—and a select group of Chicago’s finest professional musicians as they learn more about the organization’s history and mission, participate in master classes and observe rehearsals.

For the interactive and entertaining program on January 30, audience members, seated in the orchestra itself, will learn about the art of conducting and aspects of organizational dynamics, communication and leadership that relate to being a positive and inclusive leader in a democratic society.

All are welcome to join us for a celebration of classical music at Parker!'

Feb 04   Dr. Eve Van Cauter and "Sleep as a Pillar of Health and Wellness" at The Francis W. Parker Schoo
Join us for a talk with Dr. Eve Van Cauter, when she will address a hallmark of our 21st century lifestyle: insufficient, poor or mistimed sleep. As an expert in the relatively new field of sleep science, Van Cauter will discuss her research on the role sleep plays in physical, cognitive and emotional development; the intertwined issues of sleep disturbance and obesity; and the links between sleep disturbance and diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s.

Van Cauter is a professor of medicine at the University of Chicago, where she directs the Research Laboratory on Sleep, Chronobiology and Neuroendocrinology. Her current work examines the impact of decreases in sleep duration and quality on markers of health and the interaction of sleep loss with the aging process. Van Cauter’s previous research has identified sleep loss and poor sleep quality as novel risk factors for obesity and diabetes and has opened new fields of inquiry relative to the current epidemic of obesity and diabetes and the increased prevalence of age-related chronic diseases.

Van Cauter has received the 2007 Gerald D. Aurbach Award of the Endocrine Society, the 2007 Outstanding Research Award of the Sleep Research Society, the 2010 Peter C. Farrell Prize in Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, the 2013 Distinguished Scientist Award of the Sleep Research Society and the 2016 Priscilla White Lectureship on Metabolism of the Joslin Diabetes Center. She is the author of more than 250 scientific publications.
